Indigenous historian and anthropologist David Lewis (member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde) and historian Vera Keller explore one of University of Oregon's early campus collections, now part of the Museum of Natural and Cultural History. Ada Bradley Millican (1858-1927) donated almost 400 Native American works of art, many of which she collected during her six-year career working for the US Indian boarding schools in Utah, Arizona, and Washington and in collaboration with another collector, Howard Hall, superintendent of several boarding schools including Chemawa. This talk situates these collecting activities at the intersection of the arts and crafts movement, cultural erasure via industrial education, and the University's interest in establishing settler narratives of progress.
